How loud does the noise have to be
To drown the unrest inside of me?
How hard must the whole world scream
To silence the thoughts I don’t want to hear?
Turn up the speakers, shake the walls,
Let the sound run through it all.
Maybe if the night gets loud enough,
I won’t hear what’s hurting underneath.
But the louder the world becomes,
The more I hear what’s left behind.
You can run from a restless heart,
But you can’t leave yourself behind.
How much noise do I need
To quiet the storm in me?
How far away must I go
To fill this emptiness?
How high do I have to climb
To see what I’m trying to find?
How much of this world must I cross
To finally feel complete?
How far away would I have to go
To fill the space I carry home?
Across the cities, across the sea,
Would distance make a difference to me?
A thousand miles, another town,
Another place to wander around.
But every road I leave behind
Still leaves the same thing in my mind.
Maybe distance changes nothing,
Maybe nowhere is far enough.
You can cross a thousand borders
And still be looking for yourself.
How far do I have to run
To get away from me?
How many miles must disappear
Before I can finally breathe?
How far can I leave myself
Before I become someone new?
How many roads must carry me
Before I stop running too?
How high must the sky be
To hold this restless heart?
How far above the ground
Before the fear looks small?
Maybe there is no mountain,
No ocean, no place to hide.
Maybe what I’m searching for
Has been waiting here inside.
How high do I have to climb
To reach beyond the sky?
How many steps must carry me
Before I finally see why?
How high do I have to climb
To leave this emptiness below?
How close to heaven must I get
Before I know where I should go?
